Breathing 101

You are probably aware of the calmness a deep breath can bring to your body. Have you ever had your blood pressure taken right after you sit down at the doctor’s office and it’s high so they tell you to wait and take a few deep breaths? The results are usually back in range after breathing and waiting. Meditation can be hard especially when trying to quiet racing thoughts however, the power of focused breath can be just as beneficial.

I first taught my daughter about breathing when she was struggling to relax in the bathroom while using the potty. She started very early around 16 months because it helped her to sit down. I gathered a few small candles, lit them and had her blow them out one by one and then again. She would relax so quickly I started doing this every time to get her to go. As she started to realize the magic of breathing I taught her about how it can always be used to calm our feelings and bodies. Like most toddlers, she loves to learn through music and there are many great songs to sing about taking a deep breath as well (see resources page)!

Breathing can help our little ones in so many ways not just by calming their bodies and emotions but becoming aware of the how to control it and use it as a tool. At just 3 years old, now my daughter will remind me to take a deep breath if I’m feeling frustrated, because it’s going to be okay!
